Excess and Deficiency: Full versus Empty

How to read a terrain as too full or spent, and why the same element calls for opposite gestures at the face.

Two clients can sit in your cabin sharing the same element and still need opposite hands. One arrives too full, the other spent. In the Phytobiodermie method this is the distinction that turns a correct reading into a correct gesture: an element tells you which terrain to accompany, but excess or deficiency tells you how. Miss it, and even a well-chosen essence pushes in the wrong direction.

The two faces of an imbalance

A terrain drifts under a change of environment, external or internal, and it drifts in one of two directions. Excess is a terrain too full: the element is loud, overexpressed, pressing on the skin and on the mood. Deficiency is a terrain spent: the element is depleted, unable to hold its share of the whole, and its neighbours feel the gap.

The five elements each speak this doubleness in the skin and in the temperament. Wood in excess shows as an oily, congested T-zone at the temples and outer brow, a drive that tips to irritability; Wood spent shows as a terrain that cannot get moving, a flatness. Fire in excess reddens and reacts across the forehead, joy tipping to agitation; Fire spent loses its warmth and its spark. Earth in excess sits heavy at the centre and nose, pores enlarged, steadiness thickening into worry; Earth spent cannot digest or settle. Metal in excess dries and etches fine lines along the jaw, refinement narrowing toward melancholy; Metal spent loses its grain and its resolve. Water in excess pools as shadow and puffiness at the cheeks and under-eye, depth tipping to fear; Water spent leaves the terrain dehydrated and without reserve.

The tell is rarely subtle once you know to look for it. A full terrain overexpresses: it is doing too much of one thing, and the skin manifestation is emphatic. A spent terrain underexpresses: it is doing too little, and the sign is an absence, a fatigue, a zone that has gone quiet. Reading which of the two you face is the work that precedes any product choice.

Why the gesture reverses

This is where the wheel earns its place in your hands. The elements sit on the generating cycle, where each feeds the next: Wood to Fire, Fire to Earth, Earth to Metal, Metal to Water, Water back to Wood. To move with that cycle is to tonify, to add and support. To move against it is to disperse, to release and drain the excess. One direction, two opposite intentions.

So the rule is clean. A spent terrain is tonified: your gesture follows the generating cycle, and you are inviting the element to fill again. A full terrain is dispersed: your gesture works against the cycle, and you are helping the element let go of what it holds in surplus. The same face, the same zone, the same family of tool, and the hand travels one way or the other depending on what you read.

The three diagnostics feed this decision in cascade. The emotional reading, born in an instant, comes first as the client chooses instinctively among the five image cards, and it guides the hand massage with an aromatic essence. The energetic reading settles over days, and here the aromatic principle does much of your work for you: the client smells the five Phyt’ether essences, and the one they are drawn to names the element to support, because what the body loves is what it needs. That attraction is itself a compass. Then the physical reading shows over weeks, in observation and palpation across the five facial zones, and it guides the clay and the serum. The skin speaks last, which is precisely why you act upstream, before the line forms.

Full or empty also tells you the intensity and the tempo. An excess asks to be moved, drained, invited to release, and it can take a firmer, dispersing hand. A deficiency asks to be nourished and held, and it wants a slower, gathering hand that does not overwhelm a terrain with nothing to spare. When you match the two faces to the two directions of the wheel, the whole chain lines up: the terrain rebalances, the skin rebalances, the manifestations soften, the emotions steady, and the client leaves with a wellbeing they can feel rather than a product they were sold.

None of this is read from a chart alone. It is read from a face, a scent chosen, a card turned over, and it sharpens with the hundreds of terrains that pass under your hands. If you want to train the eye that tells a full terrain from a spent one, and the hand that answers each correctly, that is the deeper craft the house exists to pass on.
