A segment split at a cold breakfast, the skin of it breaking against your thumb, and a pink brightness lifts into the room before you have taken a bite. Grapefruit is tart and sweet at once, sparkling at the edges, with a wide-awake bitterness underneath that no other citrus quite carries. Some people wince at that bitterness.
