Your Element & the Season of the Moment
Each season lifts one element and presses on another. Knowing your element tells you whether to lean into the season or move gently through it.
There is a reason a certain time of year feels like coming home to you, while another leaves you faintly out of step — dry when you were supple, restless when you were calm, your skin behaving in ways it never does the rest of the year. It is not your imagination, and it is rarely random. Each season carries an element of its own, and when the season’s element meets yours, something happens: sometimes a lift, sometimes a quiet pressure. Learn to read that meeting, and the year stops being weather that happens to you. It becomes a rhythm you can move with.
Each season is itself an element
In our beauty naturopathy, the year is not a straight line of months but a wheel of five elements, each with its own climate and its own signature on the skin.
Spring belongs to Wood — the season of wind, of upward movement and fresh initiative; the skin can turn oilier, more congested at the temples. Summer belongs to Fire — heat, brightness, a quickened pulse; skin flushes and reacts more readily across the forehead. Autumn belongs to Metal — the season of dryness and of letting go, when fine lines and a certain tightness show first along the jaw. Winter belongs to Water — cold, stillness, depth; the season that tests hydration, firmness and the skin’s deep reserves at the cheeks. And between the others sits Earth — the damp, gathering intervals that bridge one season to the next, when the centre of the face can look heavier, pores more open.
A season does not merely arrive. It amplifies its own element in the air around you — turns up its volume for everyone alive under it.
When the season meets your element
Here is where it becomes personal. If the season’s element is one that already runs strong in you, the season pours more of the same onto a full cup. A Fire nature in high summer, a Metal nature in deep autumn — the very quality that defines you is now doubled by the sky. This is when a strength can tip into excess: the radiant one becomes over-quickened, the refined and airy one becomes too dry. The season is not against you; it is simply speaking your own language too loudly, and the wise move is to temper — to cool, to soften, to add back what the season strips away.
But the same season that presses on one person lifts another. If the season carries the element that balances yours — the one that gently drains or steadies what tends to overflow in you — then the year is doing quiet work on your behalf. Those are the months to lean in, to let the season carry you toward your own equilibrium rather than swimming against it.
So the season is never simply good or bad. It is a meeting, and the meeting depends entirely on which element is yours.
Moving with the season instead of against it
Once you know your element, the calendar reads differently. You stop treating every season the same and start anticipating: this is a stretch where my nature is being fed and I should keep a light hand; this is a stretch where the season steadies me and I can go deeper. Beauty under control is largely this — not fighting the year, but knowing in advance where it will lift you and where it will lean on you, and adjusting your rituals a season ahead instead of chasing the damage after it shows.
There is a further layer of precision the wheel of the year holds. Beyond the four great seasons, there are shorter passages within each one where a single element is most solicited — brief windows when the pressure, or the relief, concentrates. You might already recognise your own: a fortnight most years when your skin and mood shift together, like clockwork you never quite named. Those exact personal windows are not something a general article can hand you. They are read — from your own element and the moment of your beginning — and that reading is not given here.
Which element is yours, then — the one the seasons keep lifting, or the one they keep pressing? That single answer changes how you meet every month that follows.
