The In-Between of the Seasons

The turns between seasons are when your element feels the shift most — the in-between belongs to Earth, and it asks for attention before your skin shows it.

We tend to imagine the seasons changing on a single day — one morning the air simply turns, and autumn is here. But the year does not work in clean cuts. It works in hinges. Between every season there is a passage, a stretch of days when one climate loosens its hold and the next has not yet fully arrived. It is the least noticed part of the calendar and, for the skin, one of the most telling. The in-between is where your element feels the shift first, and where the year quietly asks something of you before it is obvious why.

The turn is its own territory

In our beauty naturopathy of five elements, the passages between seasons are not empty. They belong to Earth — the damp, gathering interval that bridges one season to the next. Where the four great seasons each carry an outward quality — the wind of spring, the heat of summer, the dryness of autumn, the cold of winter — the turn between them has a different character altogether. It is humid, heavy, inward. It is the moment of digestion, when the body and the skin are asked to absorb what the last season left and prepare for what the next will bring.

You can often read it on the face. In these intervals the centre can look a little heavier, the pores more open, the complexion less clear than usual — as if the skin, like the weather, were caught mid-thought. This is not a flaw appearing. It is a transition made visible.

Why the shift lands hardest here

Every element has a season it calls home, and in that season it is fully itself. The harder moment is rarely the peak — it is the handover. When a season is ending, the element that ruled it is withdrawing; when the next is beginning, its element is not yet settled. For a few days the sky is between languages, and an element that thrives on one clear climate can find the ambiguity unsettling.

This is why a person may sail through the depth of their own season and then feel oddly unmoored in the days that follow it — drier, or more reactive, or simply off-key, when the calendar says nothing dramatic is happening. Something is happening. The ground is moving under the season, and your element, tuned to a particular climate, registers the loss of it before anything replaces it. The in-between is not a pause. It is the most active part of the turn.

The interval that governs the others

There is a further reason these passages deserve attention. Earth, the element of the in-between, sits at the centre of the wheel rather than at one edge of it. It touches every other season, because every other season must pass through a turn to reach the next. That makes the transitions a kind of common ground — a moment each element must cross, whatever its nature.

For some elements, the in-between is exactly where their own element is most solicited, and the turn presses on them season after season. For others, it is a reprieve — a damp, steadying interval that gently drains what tends to run high in them the rest of the year. The same passage can weigh on one person and relieve another, and which it does depends entirely on which element is theirs.

Meeting the turn on time

The value of naming these intervals is the same value the whole method rests on: acting a step ahead. A shift is easiest to soften while it is still upstream — while it is a change in the air rather than a change on the skin. The transitions give you those upstream days, if you know to watch for them. Instead of treating the calendar as four blocks and being surprised by the seams between them, you learn to feel the hinge coming and to lighten your hand, or deepen your care, a little before it arrives.

Which turns are yours — the ones that press, and the ones that steady — is not something a general season can tell you. That is read from your own element and the moment of your beginning, listened to closely over time, and it is not given here. But it begins with a single question, quietly asked before the next turn comes: which element is yours?
